The second module of the Government Relations program has concluded.
This time, participants discussed how businesses build relationships with the government in Ukraine and other countries: how they present their position to public authorities, argue their case, and take into account the interests of all parties: the company, society, and the state.
One of the meetings of the module featured a conversation with Serhiy Marchenko, the Minister of Finance of Ukraine. They spoke about the confidence with which Ukrainian businesses should present their positions. According to Serhiy, Ukrainian companies often underestimate their ability to be strong partners and to create value for the state and international institutions.
They also focused on the preparation for meetings. This preparation begins not only with understanding one’s own arguments but also with carefully studying the people with whom communication will take place, their interests, and the context. Such preparation allows for multiple potential strategies and continues the pursuit of results, even if the first attempt is unsuccessful.
Another topic of the conversation was the connection between principles and responsibility for the consequences of decisions. A position should always be balanced with the goals that need to be achieved, rather than being a principle for its own sake. If the outcome results in losses for the team, the company, or society, it is crucial to honestly ask oneself whether such a position truly brings one closer to the desired result.
In this context, the values of a manager and the ability to keep the interests of various parties — business, state, and society — in focus simultaneously are important.
